Level 2 Basic Life Support: 3-hour course

This Basic Life Support course will give learners the skills and knowledge to act in an emergency, providing the casualty with critical life-saving assistance until support arrives.
This course also covers the safe use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) and is delivered following the protocols set by the Resuscitation Council (UK) Guidelines.

Heart and circulatory disease claims around 200,000 lives each year. Many lives could have been saved if a defibrillator had been made available.

Automated External Defibrillators (AED’s) are now becoming more common throughout a range of public and workplaces. A casualty’s survival rate will dramatically increase if an AED is available and if you have appropriately qualified personnel to use it. This efficient course will enable your learners to use the AED competently and confidently.
Not only does this course deal with the use of an AED but it also includes vital training in resuscitation and choking procedures.

It is estimated that around 60,000 out-of-hospital cardiac arrests occur each year in the UK. Overall survival rates vary across England but range between 2% and 12%. However, survival rates as high as 75% have been reported where CPR and defibrillation are delivered promptly. This is why the statutory guidance on supporting pupils at school with medical conditions advises schools to consider purchasing an AED as part of their first-aid equipment.”

Syllabus

A range of life saving related subjects are covered including:

• What is First Aid?
• Action in an emergency
• Primary survey
• Secondary assessment
• Resuscitation and AED
• Disorders of respiration

Certification

This qualification lasts for 3 years. To renew the qualification, learners must complete the entire course again. Therefore, it is recommended that learners attend annual refresher training during the 3-year qualification period.

Assessment

The qualification is assessed through a written assessment paper and the practical demonstration of the skills they have learnt during the course.

Numbers

A minimum of 7 students and a maximum of 12 students can attend this course. The minimum age for enrolling on this course is 14 years, and a certificate can be offered to all, subject to assessment. A student cannot assume a responsibility in the workplace until they reach the age of 16, and then it is the employer’s responsibility to ensure that the student is suitable for that role. The certificate will expire as dated on the certificate, irrespective of age.
